Monsoon Damage

Here are some photos I took yesterday out at the new house. Our once smooth property is now a ridged mess with deep crevasses and exposed PVC pipes and underground wires. Some of the areas are 3 to 4 feet deep. The levy has now broken in 3 places across the road from the house with more recent storms and all the water has and will continue to flood through our property. Last night, it poured for a couple of hours and the wind was howling. Today, the last of the storms will be barreling through before we can start the cleanup process outside. Heavy rains are expected later this evening and tonight. We are dreading to see how much more damage we will see tomorrow.

The county is being uncooperative and who knows when they will ever come out and fix the levees and roads. We are going to have to get some backhoes and tractors out to the property ourselves to divert the water flow away from the house and property. It's so disheartening but we will stay positive and just do what we have to do to get things back to the way they were before all the rain came this last week.

We met a really nice rancher yesterday (Charlie) that has offered to come over with his grader to smooth some areas out for us, and we are so grateful and appreciative for his help. So many people are in the same boat as we are and it's so nice to know that we have such a nice neighbor.

Yesterday, I did the muriatic acid treatment on the cement floors in the kitchen and laundry room. By the end of the week, I will be able to start the acid stain in the coffee color and the last step of the gloss finish sealer on those 2 rooms. I'm doing 5 rooms in the house with this treatment and hope to have them all done by the end of the month. If this flooding ever happens again, there is no sense in having carpet in the house. We did have some water creeping into the 3 bedrooms through the slump stone, so keeping the floors cement with the acid stain marble look treatment will prevent any damage we may have in the future. At least we won't have to worry about carpet damage. We are so thankful that the house hasn't had a lot of water damage, and are praying that after the storms today, it stays that way.

So, we will keep our chins up and will keep working on the property to make it beautiful again.

Wow Maggie, you've done so much work on your place!
I LOVE the old tire idea!
I was wondering how you can tell how old a Rattle Snake is?
Your hard work is paying off!

Hi Cynthia! Yeah, we are going "green" with our tire wall. When the tires are filled in, we will cover the tires to make it look like a real wall. We have been putting in some long hours, that's for sure! When we were kids in Kansas we had rattlesnakes, too. Dad always said to count the bumps on the end of the tail, the rattle. Really, it is more the darkness of the skin on the rattlesnake. The darker it is, the older it is. When the snakes shed their skins, the rattle is formed. It's really hit or miss on the age. The real age can only be determined by blood and skin samples, if I recall correctly. When we counted the bumps on the 2 rattlesnakes, there were 13 bumps on one and 4 on the other. The snakes could be a bit older or younger.
