The rest of the day I'm going to be working on some nativity ideas for Christmas. I have some sketches done and I just need to figure out proportions and other things before I put some of these ideas into motion on rocks and slate.
I have tons of rock painting books and other books where I get inspired for great ideas including; cave paintings, petroglyphs, early rock art, Indian art, and other rock painting artists. I also have a library of 20 years of National Geographic and I bought the complete National Geographic on CD's last year (every issue since 1888!...an invaluable source of wildlife photos and other beautiful photos). I have been a book hound for over 40 years. I buy used books at garage sales (I found 20 years of Arizona Highways Magazine for $5!), thrift stores, and used/new book sites online. I don't care if the books are used and little beat up because I can still find inspiration in the tattered pages. My favorite online bookstore is at www.alibris.com ...save on shipping when ordering from one vendor. I rarely buy new books when I can buy used ones for 99 cents on up. You can't beat that! When flipping through magazines I cut out photos that I like and put them in folders. The internet is also a great source obviously, but I've always preferred the glossy pages and feel of a real book in my hands and I can take them anywhere without worrying about the batteries going dead...and yes, I do have a Sony Reader for other non-art books.
Here is just part of my extensive art/resource library.

I won't be showing any of my holiday ideas for a couple of months...maybe sooner, I don't know. I have to get ready early this year for new Halloween and Christmas rock ideas because I was swamped last year from September through December. So, in my spare time...which isn't much...I'll be working behind the scenes on holiday rocks. Someday, I will have all the holidays covered...it's just going to take some time.
This weekend I have shopping, cleaning, and laundry to do. Things are starting to pile up a bit and I need to get everything back in order so my mind is free to paint. I can't paint if my house is starting to get messy! There is enough dust on my piano right now to draw a picture with my finger! So, I hope to have a little bit of time to start on some Christmas themed rocks or slate over the weekend.
Monday, I will be starting a commission on a large river rock memorial. Cya then!
