Since childhood, I have been an avid rock hound and have an extensive rock and crystal collection. Our friends, Nick and Dottie, gave me 2 more pieces for my rock collection yesterday. Nick makes a lot of lapidary pieces and is a rock collector, too. Now I have 2 more nice pieces of petrified wood! They are the bigger ones in the photos below along with another smaller piece they gave me earlier this year. The other photo shows part of the collection that they have given me over the last couple of years. I love rocks and crystals! Thanks, Nick and Dottie!
Darlene, another good friend, sent me a Petoskey stone a couple of weeks ago. It is a rock and a fossil, composed of a fossilized coral. The stones were formed as a result of glaciation, in which sheets of ice plucked stones form the bedrock, grinding off their rough edges and depositing them in Michigan's upper peninsula, and the northwestern portion of Michigan's lower peninsula.
They are fragments of a coral reef that was originally deposited during the Devonian period, about 350 million years ago. Thanks, Darlene! This is truly a unique rock/fossil for my collection!
