I finally have all the peeling bits of paint and loose pieces off the rock. Some of the paint won't come off and that's okay. It's like painting an old house in a way. I've started applying the wood putty that is made for exterior outside surfaces and it will dry as hard as the rock. I'm starting on one of the trees first. I will go over the entire scene and the left side of the rock. This process will take 2-3 days to complete. The wood putty will be thicker in some areas and I can't put it on too thick or the putty will crack. So, I will have to apply several applications in some areas and let them dry before applying other coats of putty. Some of the areas I want smoother than others. I don't want to take away the roughness that was originally chiseled in the rock...those rougher areas will give definition of shadows and highlights when I do start painting. I want the sky area behind Mike and Judy's last name (WELCH) to be smoother and the waterfall too. I'll keep applying the wood putty until supper, then I will stop for the day.
