Okay...I'm getting the layers going. In the 2nd photo below, you can see the start of the fur detail. I will continue to keep adding more fur strokes and eventually start on the highlights.
Painting on slate is a lot different than painting on river rocks. Slate is more porous and soaks up acrylic paint quickly, so I have to add more water to the paint to thin it down. Also, since I'm leaving the background the natural slate, I have to be very careful not to go outside my lines, as I can't erase or fix any marks or areas once the paint goes on. A bit tricky without a painted background color where I could fix mistakes that could happen. I just have to be extra careful.
